Joan Bauer seems to be the queen of realistic children’s chapter books that balance between uncomfortable realities and humor. The last few Bauer books I read came from a girl’s perspective, which is why one of her newer books, “Soar,” is refreshingly from a boy’s perspective. In a nut shell the main character, Jer, is 12 years old, adopted, had a heart transplant and LOVES baseball. It shows the strength of family, friendship, working as a team, and doing what is right. I’ve always described Bauer books as telling tough situations in a soft way, and I’d say that “Soar” succeeded.
